Have a pet introduce us to the book you've chosenIntroducing us to this year's book is one of my poor, neglected, hasn't-been-played-with-in-months naturally raised petz, Riley!Riley, will you please read us the flap copy?Riley says,
Helen Zhang hasn't seen Grant Shepard once in the thirteen years since the tragic accident that bound their lives together forever.
Now a bestselling author, Helen pours everything into her career. She's even scored a coveted spot in the writers room of the TV adaptation of her young adult novels, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too. LA is the fresh start she needs. After all, no one knows here there. Except...
Grant has done everything in his power to move on from the past, including building a life across the country. And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away, he's well liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows she shouldn't have taken the job on Helen's show, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can't pass up.
Grant's exactly as Helen remembers him—charming, popular, and lovable in ways that she's never been. And Helen's exactly as Grant remembers too—brilliant, beautiful, closed off. But working together is messy, and electrifying, and Helen's parents, who have never forgiven Grant, have no idea he's in the picture at all.
When secrets come to light, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story. And yet...the key to making peace with their past—and themselves—might just lie in holding on to each other in the present.
Not going to lie, I really don't think I'm going to like this. I've tried really hard to get into romance for a book club I'm following (this was May's pick, but I only got my hands on a copy this week), but it's just not the genre for me, I guess. I was hoping to join PBB with something I was really excited to read, but I didn't enjoy the book I read at the beginning of June (different book club), and it's too early to start the July pick, so Love Story it is.

Assign SCPs to the main character(s)Okay, so I read about half of this book in one day, and I feel pretty equipped with my reading of the characters to do this prompt —
Helen, I'm going to say, is a bulldog: Bulldogs are really tender-hearted, but they can be ferocious GuardDogz. Don't be fooled... their bark is worse than their byte. She really does have her guard up, and she definitely uses her "bark" to try to keep Grant away for a big portion of the novel. But in reality, like a bulldog, she's tender-hearted and is just looking for someone to share her pain with.
Hm, Grant's more difficult. I do think he's less realized than Helen. (I really, really wish the novel delved more deeply into his mental state re: "the tragic accident that bound their lives together." Spoiler alert that isn't really a spoiler alert because it's revealed, like, 3 pages in: He was driving the car that killed Helen's sister when they were teenagers, but his trauma always takes a backseat to Helen's because it was Helen's sister. Arguably, we don't seem him in any mental anguish at all, except for the panic attacks—but I would love to see him sit with his guilt and pain and anger.) Because he's not really dissected, and because this is a romance novel after all, that kinda squarely lands him in lovable Labrador territory: happy-go-lucky, up for anything, the high school athlete with an obligatory six pack in adulthood (even though he works a sedentary 60-hour-a-week job and we never see him in the gym). Labradors are known to be friendly, athletic, and loyal Dogz. Intelligent and responsive, most Labradors train easily with a little guidance and patience.

What toys and flavors would be the main character's favorite?I have about 50 pages left in the book, so it seems like a good time to do this prompt. Helen:Toy: Tug-of-war thingy. This seems right, as Helen isn't afraid to stand behind her thoughts - aka go to "tug of war" with anyone she disagrees with. We see her do this with Grant of course, but also in the writers' room when she feels strongly about something/ Flavor: Cheese. I'm trying desperately to think of anything from the book that would suggest what kind of food Helen likes, but the characters really don't spend a lot of time eating. But we do see Helen drinking wine on several occasions, and it's a thing that people have cheese with wine, right? So I think she would be one of those wine-and-cheese/charcuterie type people. Grant:Toy: White doll plush/chew thing. I don't actually play with my petz very often, but when I do, I love when they pick up the plush to share with another pet, sorta bouncing it back and forth between their noses. I think Grant, if he were a dog, would like this toy: it would be his peace offering when he came upon another dog he suspects does not like him very much (Helen). Flavor: I'm using this chart of flavors, and I think, for Grant, I'd have to pick... chemicals. It feels like he's drawn to things that he should know will hurt him, even though he seems to have a good head on his shoulders (and supposedly a therapist).
