 [ June 1st - July 31st ]'Stardust' by Neil Gaiman
after debating between this book and 'the poppy wars' by rf kuang, i've settled on stardust by neil gaiman! it's been sitting on my nightstand for a good chunk of a year lol while i've been interstate, finally hope to start and finish it :)  |

Tristran's eyes blazed in the moonlight. "I would travel to far Cathay for you, and bring a huge junk I would capture from the king of pirates, laden with jade and silk and opium.
I would go to Australia, at the bottom of the world, and bring you. Um." He ransacked the penny dreadfuls in his head, trying to remember if any of their heroes had visited Australia. "A kangaroo," he said. "And opals." He was fairly sure about the opals.

Victoria Forester
Like a poodle, Victoria is fully aware of the beauty and charm she possesses. While unabashedly taking advantage of this and humouring Tristran's proclamations, she is not a necessarily malicious spirit.
Yvaine
When we first meet Yvaine, she is - quite understandably - cranky (who wouldn't be, after hurtling down to earth from the night sky?). She is a beautiful, ethereal, but unafraid to lash at Tristran with sharp quips, not unlike a Siamese. Deep down, I'm sure she has a softer heart than she lets on, though I will have to wait and read.
Tristan Thorn
The main character is naive in many ways, but is redeemed by sheer willpower and determination. He is awkward and off kilter, but so eager to please and will do anything for the person he fawns for, much like a loyal Labrador. At this stage of the book he has yet to develop a good survival instincts as he ventures through this mysterious world, but almost all protagonists do, I'm sure he will get there in the end.

So .... I read the prompt wrong and thought it was simply to name a pet after one of the characters! Quintus is definitely not a main character, but a late son of the King of Stormhold, one of his 7 sons. He met an unfortunate end prior to the start of the book, poisoned by his brother Septimus .... well damn, I just liked the name!
If this dog was a book genre, I would assign the thriller/mystery/detective fiction - not only because Quintus himself met a bit of a terrible end, but because scotties are very good at digging up dirt ;) |

I didn't want to go the literal route and plop star boppers on and call it Yvaine, though this is a very simple dress up for the character. The lilac texture on the poodle gives the perfect illusion of luminescence, befitting of a fallen star. When Tristran first stumbles across her, she is wearing a dress of glimmering blue silk, and the rose in the pup's mouth is an ode to that!

I've had Pasha for a while now but she is a total pain to pose, with her weird proportions and fuzz and high independence making alignment a bit of a nightmare to be honest, but finally got one out of her! She's been anointed with the showname 'Poppyhill's The Glass Snowdrop'. The night Tristran's father Dunstan visits the land of the faerie, his mother gifts him a glass snowdrop from the stall, and when Tristran sets out in search of the star, his father gives it to him. I've yet to uncover what the significance of it is but I'm excited to find out! (:
