So... I know I need to be on desktop mode to earn bones... but how do I check how many I have? And is there an easier way than just posting? Do posting on threads count?

Both posting threads and replying to threads earns you bones, yes!
On desktop/in desktop mode, it should list your on-hand bones right under your avatar, next to your post count. You can also keep bones in the bank, accessible by clicking the Bank tab in the navigation in the forum header.
Bones are only created through posting, but you can also choose to sell Petz (or petz-related stuff/services/etc.) and have other members pay you in bones to save up a little quicker. (:
