Day One
Ok, time to open the email, and find out who I got. A deep sigh. How to describe this moment? I feel nostalgia, as I can still remember the older gameplay contests I followed excitedly as a little kid. There is a hint of anticipation, but it's tempered by pure excitement. It feels wonderful to return to the "roots" of the petz community - just genuinely being excited about all these virtual critters, and truly spending time playing with them.
The names in the email offer a few clues. One of the files is conspicuously named "Pooch.pet". I put on my detective hat and deduce that this must be a puppy. The other file, named "Flutter", doesn't offer as much of a hint. Sure sounds pretty, though, and I guess that it must be a cat, as I didn't request two pups. (Figured they wouldn't get along well with my mostly-cat crew!) For now, I clear out my adopted petz folder, stick their files in, and load the game.
Before I could even prep my house a bit - yknow, fluff some pillows, put out some food bowls - guess who bounded out!
It was little Flutter, clearly also excited to meet me! My heart leaped for joy when I saw her pretty white fur and gypsy markings - and those blue eyes were astonishing! I was really happy to get such a gorgeous little calico, and she must've been equally happy to get gorgeous little me ;)
As I watched her exploring her surroundings, I wondered if I should rename her at all. Her name made me think of... well...
But I figured it was a cuter name than I could think of, so I left it - and now I've grown to quite like it already!
Flutter soon grew VERY interested in one of the toys I had out in the room... just take a look at that first picture, when she saw it:

and speaking of falling over... a lot -
I guess those huge feet must be tricky to navigate as a kitten! Every time she broke into a run, she fell over herself and sat there, looking disoriented and embarrassed.
All that running around, I figured little Flutter must have been quite hungry.

She, however, was not so convinced, It took a bit of coaxing before finally -
Just as quickly as she began eating, she gave up, trying her hardest to look like she couldn't eat another bite!
Unhappy with how little she ate, I thought of something I hadn't used in ages...

This time, I did not doubt her fullness.
Now satisfied with her basic needs, I thought maybe a nice outfit was in order. There was only one she actually wanted to wear, though.
My lovely little Flutter fancied herself a tom-boy. Haha, get it? I'm super funny. Ah.. anyways.
Thinking that was a good introduction for now, I gave her a nice long pat and let her scamper back into the mystical carrying case. (Seriously, where does that thing lead to?)
It was time to meet my new Pooch next!

Why, this isn't a dog, it's a... a mouse!! A very, very excited one:
He was barely even the length of the bone toy. Naturally, this made most mundane things look ridiculously huge in comparison...
It was hard not to laugh as he ran around, holding things in his mouth that were easily three times his size. I figured the milk bottle feeding trick would be a safe bet with such a fragile-looking little thing.
(He had to make sure I knew he was a Big Boy with a good pose before letting me feed him.)
I then had a stroke of genius - if these toys were so huge for him and made him look comical, then how small would the clothes be on him? Would I even be able to take them off again, or would I never be able to get him to stop running around for long enough? It was time to find out!

Dressing him up was the best decision I have made all day.
What's next on the list? Oh yeah! The issue of the name. Well. A pooch he most certainly is.

But he's also quite the little firecracker. Almost like... a goat, with the way he prances and jumps around in the signature Dachie move. A really fierce, really tiny, really CUTE goat.
I think I will call him Buck.
Flutter got impatient a few times while I was meeting Buck, trying to get past the carry-case door; I figured it was as good a time as any to open it up and let my two petz meet each other. I prayed that, since they were introduced so young, they'd like each other - or at least tolerate each other's presence.

So far so good...
Um.
Yeah. Flutter didn't exactly find Buck threatening.
He was quick to look cute for the camera, though, which made Flutter not so happy with him anymore.
Oh dear.
Not good!
I figured that maybe these two were just being cranky children, and put them down for their well-deserved nap.
At least they were able to sleep peacefully!
All in all, I'm so pleased with my new babies. They are quite spunky little creatures - Flutter seems like a mellow, charming little kitten, a lot of Calico personality but quite a bit of strange clumsiness and love of lying around - I'm thinking Persian? And Buck is a cartoony, minuscule creature, so tiny and yet so sure of himself!
I expect a lot of fun from these two, and lots of laughs. I don't even have to try hard to get silly pictures out of their antics. This week of gameplay is definitely gonna be something I can look forward to, with each day bringing some new adventures!
(If only my real life consisted of exciting travels with dogs and cats!)
